What treatments are included in comfort care?
How do I know if my pet is ready for comfort care?
Comfort care is often appropriate when a pet has a life-limiting illness, reduced mobility, or declining quality of life - but still experiences moments of contentment, appetite, or engagement with family. If you're unsure, we can help assess your pet's comfort level and discuss gentle options to ease their days.
Can comfort care help my pet avoid suffering before euthanasia?
Yes. Our goal is to extend comfort, not time. With proper pain and symptom management, most pets can experience peaceful, meaningful days surrounded by their family before a natural pasing or planned euthanasia.
Is comfort care provided in my home?
How often will my pet need visits?
Frequency depends on your pet's condition and response to treatment. Some pets benefit from weekly acupuncture or laser sessions, while others need only occasional check-ins or medication adjustments. We'll help you determine what schedule best supports your pet's comfort.
Can I combine comfort care with hospice or palliative support?
Absolutely. Comfort care is often part of a larger palliative plan, which can include hospice-style visits, medication management, and guidance for families navigating the transition toward euthanasia.
What are the costs for comfort care?
Pricing varies based on your pet's size, condition, and services provided. We're happy to give an estimate after an initial consultation and customize a plan that meets your family's needs.
How do I know when it's time to consider euthanasia?
This is one of the most difficult questions families face. We'll walk alongside you through the process - helping you assess your pet's quality of life, recognize signs of discomfort, and make decisions with peace and confidence. You'll never face that moment alone. Our Quality of Life Assessment can be a valuable tool when making this important decision.
How do I know when it’s time to say goodbye?
This is one of the hardest questions any pet parent faces. We can help you assess your pet’s quality of life—looking at their comfort, mobility, appetite, and overall happiness. Together, we’ll decide when the most peaceful time may be.
What should I do before the appointment?
You don’t need to prepare much. You may want to choose a quiet, familiar spot, light a candle, play soft music, or gather favorite blankets or toys. We encourage you to create whatever atmosphere feels right for your family.
Where can the euthanasia take place in my home?
Wherever your pet feels most comfortable—on their bed, in your lap, in the yard, or by a favorite sunny window. We’ll adapt to your space and preferences.
What happens after the appointment?
You’ll have as much time as you need with your pet. When you’re ready, we’ll assist with aftercare arrangements. Some families choose to stay for a quiet moment, while others prefer to step away—we’ll honor your needs either way.
Can I plan the appointment in advance, or is same-day care possible?
We encourage scheduling in advance whenever possible, but we also understand that situations can change quickly. If your pet’s condition worsens suddenly, we’ll do our best to accommodate same-day requests.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept venmo and debit/credit card prior to the time of service. A payment link will be sent to you via text or email once you have had time to make final decisions regarding aftercare and remembrance options. Then scheduling will be finalized upon payment completion.
What happens during a home euthanasia appointment?
We’ll begin by gently greeting your pet and giving them time to relax in their familiar space. When you’re ready, we’ll administer a calming sedative using a syringe and needle just under the skin so your pet drifts into a deep, pain-free sleep. Once they are fully relaxed, a second medication is given to help them pass peacefully. You can stay with your pet for as long as you need before and after.
Will my pet feel any pain?
The process is designed to be as pain-free as possible. The initial sedation ensures your pet is completely relaxed and unaware before the final injection. Some pets might express brief discomfort from the needle during the initial injection; it is much like getting a vaccine. Soon afterwards your pet will feel warm, comfortable and pain free.
How long does the appointment take?
Most visits last 30–60 minutes, depending on your pet’s needs and the pace that feels right for your family. There’s no rush.
Can other family members or pets be present?
Yes. Many families choose to have loved ones, including other household pets, nearby. This can help everyone—both human and animal—find closure.
What are my options for aftercare?
We partner with Wasatch Family Pet in Ogden, Utah, to provide private (ash-return) and communal (group) cremation options. You can choose to receive your pet’s ashes in a keepsake urn, or have them lovingly scattered on private mountain property.
When will I get my pet’s ashes back?
For private cremation, ashes are typically returned within 3-4 weeks, depending on your chosen urn or keepsake. Ceramic Paw Prints take up to 6 weeks. Wasatch Family Pet Services will hand-deliver these items to you.
Can I keep a paw print or other memento?
Yes. Our cremation partner offers several remembrance items, including paw prints or nose prints on card-stock, paw prints on clay, jewelry, urns, and memorial art. Images of these items are shown on our Remembrance Items tab under Services.
Do you handle transportation for cremation?
Yes. After your pet has passed, we gently handle transportation to our trusted cremation partner. You’re welcome to contact Wasatch Family Pet directly if you have additional questions about their process.
